The home of impact entrepreneurs in east London, Allia Future Business Centre, opened its new Hackney location in June. The space is already home to Allia’s own business incubator, Serious Impact, which offers support and workspace to start-ups that aim to make positive change, either through their product or service, or by bringing wealth and jobs to the local area.
Co-workers will also be sharing the space with Year Here, a postgraduate course in social innovation, offering recent graduates a year to test and build solutions to some of society’s toughest problems.
‘The centre is all about making an impact. It’s a very positive place to spend time, with so many entrepreneurs and businesses dedicated to driving change. We want to encourage more people to experience the community at Future Business Centre, that’s why we’re opening our doors at a heavily discounted price for these two weeks’ said Emily Fowler, Centre and Programme Manager at Allia Future Business Centre East London.
‘Building the community vibe is central to our plans for the centre, so we work hard to encourage our co-workers to mix. Each Wednesday we’ll be offering co-workers the chance to get to know each other with an informal afternoon meetup. We’ll bring the tea and locally sourced snacks, you bring your ideas, plans and challenges, and the group will work together to find solutions.’ continued Emily, ‘It’s a great way to get over the mid-week slump, build new relationships and inspire you for the next two days!’
25 hot desks are up for grabs, and will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Hotdeskers will have access to free high speed internet, kitchens with tea and coffee provided, breakout space for informal catch-ups and meetings, phone booths, a 9-5 front desk service and more, as well as 2 hours use of a four person meeting room on site.
Co-working spaces are on the rise across the UK, with more and more start-ups and existing businesses opting for flexible working options to save money. However a study by Rotterdam School of Management in 2015 found that the benefits of co-working might well go beyond bootstrapping. The study found that the relationships formed with other co-workers often lead to improving skills, growing customer networks and developing and improving of products and services.
‘Co-working spaces, especially those that focus on a shared value system, have great potential for informal networking, and, in our experience, can lead to some exciting, and often unexpected, collaborations’ says Paul Hughes, director of enterprise support at Allia, the not-for-profit behind both Future Business Centre and Serious Impact.
Anyone who decides to sign up for a full co-working package at the end of the trial will have the £50 deducted from their first month’s rent, making the offer even more valuable. Monthly co-working packages at Allia Future Business Centre normally start at £200 for hot-desking and £300 for a fixed desk, with discounts available for teams of three or more.
Allia is an independent not-for-profit with a social mission, dedicated to helping impact organisations and initiatives to grow. Our world constantly needs new thinking and new solutions if it is to solve the most pressing global and local challenges. Organisations and initiatives that aim to make positive change and address these challenges, impact ventures and impact entrepreneurs, can transform peoples’ lives. Allia recognises they need the right kind of support and creates innovative and effective services to support them, one great idea at a time.
